Accommodate an Aging Parent & Active Lifestyle in One Project
Client Profile & Need
Owners of a 40-year-old Colonial home in Chicago’s North Shore that needed to remodel as an elderly parent was moving in with them. The mother’s living area needed to be on the first floor so she would not have to climb stairs. But the client, a repeat customer, then decided to completely remodel the home to accommodate their entertainment-oriented lifestyle.
Process & Challenges
Working closely with the client, the Forde team:
- Had extensive conversations to determine goals, budget, timing, etc.,
- Designed the new space to meet those goals and stay within the budget and timing. This included knocking down walls, gutting rooms, etc., and then building additional rooms, including adding a family room
- Obtained all required licenses
- Assembled a team of subcontractors specially suited for this project
- Went with the client to purchase the right materials, appliances, etc.,
- Completed construction of the project in a timely manner
The unique challenge to this project was that it involved converting a 2,500 square foot home into a 4,000 square foot home. Village ordinances only allowed the addition to go back three feet. But the addition extended 70 feet wide. This required carefully tearing down of walls, and dealing with electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling systems.
Results of the Home Addition Project

- A spacious bedroom
- A large walk-in closet
- A bathroom with a walk-in shower and a railing for support
- An expanded kitchen – double the size of the existing kitchen – including:
- An island
- An eat-in area
- All new appliances
- Granite countertops
- Glass backsplash
- Built-in wine rack
- A large family room including a fireplace with a stone front
- An upgraded dining room with a vaulted ceiling that gives the room a different feel from the rest of the house

- A walk-in closet
